Racer Juan Pablo Montoya Juan Pablo Montoya knew his vehicle was having problems but he had no way of knowing it would veer out of control. With 40 laps to go in the race, Montoya and his vehicle crashed into the jet dryer and both vehicles burst into flames.

The driver of the jet dryer and Montoya both escaped injury but over 200 gallons of buring fuel spilled over the track and caused a virtual inferno on the Daytona International Speedway surface.

Once racing finally resumed, Kenseth was able to proceed to victory but that will be more of an afterthought compared to the fire.

Edwards beat out his teammate Greg Biffle for the top starting spot during qualifying yesterday at Daytona International Speedway.

As it stands now, Edwards and Biffle are the only drivers who haved solidified their starting positions in Sunday’s Daytona 500.

The rest of the starting order will be set via Thursday’s twin 150-mile qualifying races.

This means Danica Patrick won’t have to qualify for the race based on speed but Blaney will. Blaney has experience in qualifying and there will be less teams trying to qualify, so getting in based on speed is not expected to be an issue for him.

What’s in it for Tommy Baldwin Racing? Well, here is the low-down according to Yahoo Sports:

Stewart-Haas Racing has “entered into a collaborative partnership” with Tommy Baldwin Racing so that, technically speaking, TBR is now fielding Patrick’s No. 10 GoDaddy.com Chevy Impala, not just for the Daytona 500 but for all 10 of the races Patrick will run at the Sprint Cup level. TBR is thus now a two-car team, and SHR goes back to being a two-car team.

Martin is scheduled to drive the Daytona 500 while Waltrip takes the wheel for the remaining restrictor-plate races, plus the race at his home track, Kentucky Speedway.

When interviewed, Martin had the following to say:

“I love it, a new team, a new car and a new number. The car number means a lot to the driver. We talked about a lot of different number options, but the number 55 means a lot to Aaron’s and to Michael, so I am proud to drive it.”
